A group of young blockchain enthusiasts gathered Tuesday in Wandegeya, Kampala, to witness the historic launch of the Shardeum mainnet, marking a pivotal moment for Ugandaâs growing Web3 community.
The event, dubbed the Shardeum Mainnet Watch Party, was hosted by Shariff Akankwasa, founder of ChainTech Africa and Hii5 Radio. A long-time crypto advocate, Akankwasa said the watch party was organised to foster engagement, knowledge-sharing, and grassroots adoption of Shardeumâs next-generation blockchain technology.
âWe wanted to bring together curious minds to witness history and understand the practical benefits of Shardeum for Africa,â Akankwasa said in an interview. âBlockchain isnât just about crypto; itâs about changing how people access and control information, money, and opportunity.â
The intimate gathering attracted 14 participants, including developers, students, and Web3 newcomers. Attendees engaged in discussions about Shardeumâs unique linear scaling capabilities, decentralised structure, and low gas fees, which many believe position it as an ideal platform for building dApps in emerging markets.
Participants also explored real-world use cases for blockchain in sectors such as agriculture, education, and digital identity. Many expressed enthusiasm about contributing to the ecosystem as builders or community ambassadors.
The event in Kampala was part of a global wave of community-led celebrations marking Shardeumâs transition from testnet to mainnet.
âThis was just the beginning,â Akankwasa added. âWe plan to continue building awareness and hosting developer workshops to grow Ugandaâs role in the global decentralised movement.â
The event was held under the banner of #ProofOfCommunity, a term gaining popularity among Shardeum supporters who prioritise grassroots participation and open access to blockchain tools.
